This session explores sound as a way of accessing the practice of restorative rest for those who have directly and indirectly experienced trauma. Using guided breath work and nature imagery along with the sounds of singing bowls, this session invites you to practice restorative rest. The sounds from alchemy quartz crystal singing bowls can be impactful physically on the mind/body and support the brain entering a theta (or pre-sleep) state, allowing the mind to settle, the parasympathetic nervous system to engage, and the body to access all the benefits of deep rest. This practice invites you to notice how you hold stress and trauma in the body. For those who have been directly or indirectly impacted by trauma, this is an opportunity to let the body take a break from constant fight-flight-freeze.
- Create a calming soundscape for folks to practice restorative rest allowing the parasympathetic nervous system to engage and offering a break from fight, flight, freeze.
- Practice body awareness and identify how stress, trauma, and vicarious trauma may be impacting the physical body.
- Recognize how environments (academic, activist, and cultural expectations) often reward dissociation or suppression of emotional and physical feelings.
Joy Evans, MSW (She/her) is a trauma-healing educator with a passion for practices that help folks reconnect with their senses and listen to their heart. She developed a deep commitment to embodiment practices while overseeing and developing the crisis response, advocacy, and healing services for students, staff and faculty impacted by sexual violence/harassment, intimate partner violence, and stalking at the University of California, Berkeley. After working in higher education for 15 years, Joy now offers workshops and private sound sessions where folks practice restorative rest supported by crystal singing bowls and guides forest therapy walks. She received her MSW from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and her BA in Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Gender from Vanderbilt University. She is a certified sound healer, nature and forest therapy guide, and in her third year of study with the School of Celtic Consciousness. www.joyevansmsw.com
